The never-ending debate surrounding India’s middle-order in ODIs has been a topic of discussion since their loss in the 2019 World Cup semi-finals. The absence of a stable No.4 position was highlighted as a major concern. Since Yuvraj Singh’s departure from ODIs in 2017, India has experimented with over 10 players for that role. Despite the flexibility in batting line-ups, the lack of a reliable middle-order has been evident. However, recent years have shown promising signs with the emergence of Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul.

Ravichandran Ashwin, in his assessment, asserts that if Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul are match-fit, there should be no doubts about their positions at No.4 and No.5 for both the upcoming Asia Cup and World Cup. Ashwin’s perspective holds merit as the statistics support the success of Rahul and Iyer in the middle-order since the 2019 World Cup.

Ashwin goes a step further by praising KL Rahul’s prowess in the middle-order, asserting that he has expertly filled the void left by MS Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh. Rahul’s remarkable average of 53 and a striking strike-rate of 99.33, combined with his dual role of wicketkeeper-batsman, make him a vital asset.

“Ever since Yuvraj Singh and MS Dhoni retired, India were desperately looking for a replacement. Rahul has filled that slot with expertise. He is a definite lock at No.5 and is also our wicketkeeper-batsman,” Ashwin stated on his YouTube channel.

Acknowledging Rahul’s versatility, Ashwin also commends his performance as a stand-in wicketkeeper following Rishabh Pant’s injury. With Ishan Kishan stepping in as the second keeper, Rahul’s adaptability remains a valuable asset.

Shreyas Iyer’s significance is equally emphasized. Iyer’s impressive record, with 805 runs at an average of 47.35 and a strike-rate of 94.37 before an injury setback, solidifies his role as an ideal No.4 in subcontinent conditions. His ability to handle spinners effectively and adapt his gameplay based on the situation makes him a consistent performer.

“Shreyas Iyer is as important as KL Rahul to this side. One of the best players in the Indian line-up against spin and a consistent No.4 for India. He has played a crucial part in their success whenever he has played at 4. If he is completely fit to play, there should be no debate on No.4 position,” Ashwin affirms.

While BCCI chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar assures Iyer’s fitness, he reveals Rahul’s new niggle, making his participation in India’s Asia Cup opener against Pakistan uncertain. The fitness of Rahul and Iyer becomes paramount for India’s campaigns, with their roles at No.4 and No.5 seen as certainties if they remain in top form.
