Australian Open 2025: Key players

In men’s singles, Jannik Sinner, who dominated much of the 2024 season will look to carry over the momentum this year as well. The Italian won his first two Grand Slam titles, claimed the number one spot in ATP rankings, clinched his maiden ATP Finals crown, and led Italy to the Davis Cup title.

Carlos Alcaraz is another player who is in contention for the title. The Olympic silver medallist won two Grand Slams last year including his first French Open. Should the Spaniard win the Australian Open, he will  become the youngest man to achieve the feat.

However, the real king of Australian Open- Novak Djokovic, who has won the titles a record 10 times, is in the fray and will enter the tournament on the back of unparalleled experience with his new coach Andy Murray having his back. The 37-year-old Djokovic is also chasing his  100th career ATP singles title and a 25th Grand Slam title in Melbourne.

In the women’s singles, the WTA world number one Aryna Sabalenka is the favourtie to win the title as she bids for her third straight Australian Open crown.

She completed the hard court Grand Slam double in 2024 with victory at the US Open, as her consistency assured her place as the year-end no.1 for the first time.

On the other hand, Olympic champion Iga Swiatek will hope to reclaim her top spot by bettering Sabalenka’s result.

US’s Coco Gauff, who will enter the tournament fresh from winning the United Cup 2025, targets a second Grand Slam title.

Others in contention are Olympic champions Jasmine Paolini and Zheng Qinwen,  Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina and two-time Australian Open champion Naomi Osaka
