Rising star Ayush Shetty produced the biggest upset of the day, stunning 2021 world champion Loh Kean Yew of Singapore 21-11, 21-11 in just 34 minutes. The 20-year-old, currently ranked World No. 31, trailed 2-5 early in the first game but bounced back with seven consecutive points to seize control.
This is Ayush Shetty’s second straight win over Loh, having also beaten him at the Orleans Masters earlier this year. The Indian now leads their head-to-head 2–0.
Indian shuttlers enjoyed a stellar day at the Hylo Open 2025. Lakshya Sen, Kiran George, and Rakshitha Ramesh also stormed into the quarterfinals of the BWF Super 500 badminton tournament at the Saarlandhalle in Saarbrücken on Thursday.
Earlier, Lakshya Sen, a Paris 2024 Olympic semi-finalist and former Hylo Open champion, eased past compatriot Sankar Subramanian 21-14, 21-11 to secure his quarterfinal berth. The World No. 17 will next face fourth seed Alex Lanier of France for a place in the semifinals.
Meanwhile, Kiran George battled past France’s Toma Junior Popov, ranked World No. 13, in a thrilling 69-minute encounter. The Indian fought back from a game down to win 18-21, 21-18, 21-19. Kiran, who had earlier upset former world No. 1 Kidambi Srikanth in the opening round, showcased grit and composure to complete another impressive win.
In the women’s singles, Rakshitha Ramesh overcame fellow Indian Shriyanshi Valishetty 19-21, 21-8, 21-13 in an all-Indian second-round clash. She will now face Line Christophersen of Denmark, the tournament’s sixth seed, in the quarterfinals.
Elsewhere, Unnati Hooda was scheduled to take on Danish eighth seed Julie Jakobsen later in the day.
India’s hopes in the doubles draw rest on the mixed pair Rohan Kapoor and Ruthvika Gadde, who are set to meet Danish opponents in their upcoming fixture.
