The journey to the Los Angeles Olympics 2028 has officially begun for badminton players around the world, following the International Olympic Committee’s approval of the Badminton World Federation’s (BWF) Olympic Qualification Regulations for LA28.
With a clearly defined qualification period, strict ranking criteria, and a strong emphasis on global representation, the system sets the pathway for athletes aiming to compete on the sport’s biggest stage.
Qualification Timeline
The qualification period for badminton at LA28 will run from 3 May 2027 to 30 April 2028. During this 12-month window, players and pairs will earn ranking points at BWF-sanctioned tournaments, which will count toward the LA28 Olympic Ranking.
The final Olympic Ranking list, published on 2 May 2028, will determine the initial list of qualifiers for the badminton competition at the Los Angeles Games.
Athlete Quota and Entry Limits at Los Angeles Olympics 2028
Badminton will maintain a total quota of 172 athletes, evenly split between men and women (86 each). This total includes:
- 166 regular qualification places
- Two host country places allocated to the United States if not already qualified
- Four universality places, to be confirmed by the Tripartite Commission after the qualification period
Each National Olympic Committee (NOC) may enter a maximum of eight players per gender across all five badminton events.

Singles Events: Ranking and Representation
In men’s and women’s singles, 35 quota places are available in each event through the Olympic Ranking.
An NOC may qualify:
- Up to two players if both are ranked within the top 16 of the LA28 Olympic Ranking
- Otherwise, a maximum of one player per singles event
To ensure worldwide participation, each singles event must include at least two athletes from each of the five Continental Confederations- Africa, Asia, Europe, Oceania, and Pan America- provided they are ranked within the top 250.
In addition, each singles event will include one host country place and two universality places.
Doubles Events: High Ranking Required
For men’s, women’s, and mixed doubles, qualification is even more competitive. An NOC may qualify:
- Up to two pairs, provided both pairs are ranked within the top eight of the LA28 Olympic Ranking
Continental representation is also guaranteed in doubles, with each event required to include at least one pair from each Continental Confederation, provided the pair is ranked within the top 50.
However, to maintain competitive balance, no NOC may qualify athletes or pairs in more than two events through the Continental Representation Place system across all badminton events.

A Global and Competitive Pathway
The LA28 qualification system reflects BWF’s ongoing commitment to both excellence and inclusivity. While Olympic places are primarily earned through consistent high-level performance on the world stage, the regulations also ensure that badminton remains a truly global sport, with representation from every continent.
For players, the message is clear: success at LA28 will depend on sustained performance throughout the qualification year, careful tournament planning, and achieving peak form when it matters most.
As the countdown to Los Angeles continues, the race for Olympic qualification promises to be one of the most intense and compelling chapters in international badminton.
