In a landmark decision, both FC Barcelona and Real Madrid have welcomed the ruling by the European Court of Justice, stating that UEFA and FIFA were incorrect in prohibiting clubs from participating in breakaway competitions, including the proposed European Super League.

As founding members of the Super League project, Barcelona and Real Madrid, the remaining advocates of the initiative, issued statements in support of the court’s decision. Barcelona, facing financial challenges, expressed satisfaction with the court’s assessment of the Super League project proposed by A22 Sports. They emphasized that the decision opens the door for a new elite-level football competition in Europe, challenging the monopoly over the football world.

Real Madrid’s president, Florentino Perez, welcomed the court’s decision with enormous satisfaction, viewing it as a safeguard for the principles, values, and freedoms of European club football. Perez anticipates two significant conclusions from the ruling: firstly, that European club football will no longer be a monopoly, and secondly, that clubs will now have control over their destiny.

Meanwhile, Javier Tebas, the president of the Spanish Football League (La Liga), shared a message on social media highlighting the nuances of the court’s ruling. While the decision asserts that FIFA and UEFA cannot ban clubs from joining other competitions, it does not automatically approve specific projects like the Super League. The court does not provide a verdict on the Super League project itself in its judgment.
