Barcelona’s unbeaten run in the season has ended. They endured a 2-0 loss against Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena during the Champions’ League group stage match. A five-minute sequence in the second half proved to be the game changer as Barca fumbled against a disciplined Bayern unit.

Earlier, Bayern dominated the initial parts of the game before Barca took the game into their hands. The Catalans had four best chances to score in the first half, but none of them converted into a goal. Meanwhile, the best chance for Bayern came up when Alphonso Davies pushed Ousmane Dembele inside the box. However, the penalty plea was denied and it upset the shocking Bayern members.

Bayern Munich dominate in style

The Catalans had four big moments that could have easily led to a goal: one was a shot from Pedri saved by Manuel Neuer, two came from Lewandowski with a volley that went just over the bar and a header inside the six-yard area that hit Neuer in the face and Raphinha fired agonizingly wide from outside the box. As a result, the first half ended 0-0.

In the second half, Lucas Hernandez scored the opening goal after getting away from Marcos Alonso. After five minutes, they doubled the lead when Leroy Sane ran through the Barca defence to pass the ball into the net in style.

It could have been 2-1 when Lewandowski found Pedri all alone, but the Spaniard’s chip over the keeper went over the past. Barca continued to attack, but the goal was missing and, in the end, surrendered their first defeat of the season. The result saddened many players who looked dejected after the match. Perhaps luck and conversion went against the Spanish superstars this time.

However, Barça proved they can compete against Europe’s best an encouraging sign for the fans. “Better finishing and a little more luck and this would have been a night to remember,” admits the head coach Xavi. Perhaps Barcelona can take a cue from their past performances and bounce back in style for the next clash where they meet Elche in the La Liga clash held on Saturday.
