Indian batting is always strong on paper. However, their performance in the middle overs is a work in progress, a serious one indeed. Team India not just misses vital runs, but also loses wickets and it affects the team’s morale and momentum of the game. Ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup, BCCI Called an Asia Cup Review meeting and according to reports, middle over batting issues featured prominently in the discussions.

Recently, BCCI president Sourav Ganguly, Secretary Jay Shah and the national selection committee discuss the team’s results in the Asia Cup. Talking about the Asia Cup, a senior BCCI official said the focus of the meeting was more on the solutions they can offer. The team pondered on the things that need to be improved during the World Cup, added the official.
India and Batting in the Middle Overs
The team’s think tank knows that there are some world-class players who can change the course of the game. However, India is having an issue with batting in the overs between the 7th and 15th overs. It is one area where they falter regardless of batting first or second.
If Asia Cup records are a sign, India scored 59 runs losing three wickets versus Pakistan, 62 runs versus Hong Kong, and 62 against Pakistan in the Super 4 game. The best performance of the team came against Sri Lanka, scoring 78 runs in those nine overs.

The major concern of India has been about dealing with spin bowlers. Previously, spin used to be India’s major strength. All the batters used to play well against the spin. However, of late, even the top batters are struggling against spinners. It is one key issue India needs to sort out before the World Cup.
Meanwhile, India’s campaign in the World Cup starts against the arch-rivals, Pakistan, on October 23. On Monday, BCCI announced the team for the main event. They are aware of the challenges lying ahead. So are the team members.
