BBL 2024-25: Australia’s top three fast bowlers – Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, and Josh Hazlewood – will all be on extended lists for the upcoming Big Bash League (BBL 2024-25), allowing them the chance to return to the domestic T20 tournament. The new season of the eight-team league starts on Sunday, December 15. The first match will feature Perth Scorchers against Melbourne Stars at Optus Stadium in Perth.
Sydney Sixers and Sydney Thunder Secure Star Pacers for Potential BBL Return
Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc have been signed by Sydney Sixers through the league’s marquee supplementary player rule, while Test captain Pat Cummins will again be on Sydney Thunder’s supplementary list. Although it’s unlikely that these three players will feature in BBL14 due to Australia’s packed international schedule, the marquee supplementary list – introduced last season – allows Big Bash teams to add a centrally contracted Australian player to their squad if the situation changes.
Australia captain Pat Cummins mentioned that his international duties may prevent him from playing in the league, but he will always support the players. He also shared his excitement that the legendary David Warner will be with the Sydney Thunder for the whole season.
“Mitch and Josh are both foundation members of our club and have been a part of the Sixers for a long time, so any opportunity for us to engage them throughout the season is a win for our club and a win for our fans,” Sixers general manager Rachael Haynes told Cricket Australia.
“Both of the guys have great relationships with (coach) Greg (Shipperd) and the playing group and having them involved in any capacity will always be a boost for our group. Mitch and Josh have been a part of the fabric of our club, and we’re excited for them to be back as part of the Sixers family this summer,” he added.
Australia captain Pat Cummins mentioned that his international duties may prevent him from playing in the league, but he will always support the players. He also shared his excitement that the legendary David Warner will be with the Sydney Thunder for the whole season.
“While international duties mean I can’t be around as much as I’d like, I’m excited to have a voice and fully back the guys throughout the season. Davey [David] Warner locked in for a full season is huge for us. It’s great to see the balance in the team, with so many leaders stepping up alongside the talented youth coming through,” Cummins said.
Hazlewood is the latest of the three pacers to play in the Big Bash, having been part of the Sydney Sixers team that won the BBL09 title by defeating Melbourne Stars. Cummins’ last BBL appearance was with the Thunder a year earlier, where he took 2/28 against the Hobart Hurricanes. Starc, on the other hand, hasn’t played for the Sixers since December 2014.
