In a pulsating Vitality Blast North Group encounter, Worcestershire Rapids staged a dramatic turnaround to beat Derbyshire Falcons by 12 runs at the Central Co-op County Ground. The match, which was labeled as one of the most gripping in the WOR vs DER series by many, witnessed the unexpected hero being Gareth Roderick.
Roderick’s Maiden T20 Fifty Sparks Dazzling Comeback
Reduced to a woeful 10 for 4 within 15 balls, the Rapids were in and out of trouble. The wickets were lost at an early stage in quick succession. Isaac Mohammed skied over Alex Thomson, Brett D’Oliveira edged to slip from Mohammad Ghazanfar, and Zak Chappell sent down a double-wicket maiden as Kashif Ali and Adam Hose both fell in the same over.
Though Gareth Roderick, who never had a T20 fifty before, kept his cool. He supported a game-altering stand with Ethan Brookes, putting on 85 runs from 62 balls. Brookes (who hit two sixes) was a solid supporting act before he was dismissed by Samit Patel in the 13th over.
Roderick’s smooth 71 off 57 balls, dotted with two sixes and several classy strokes, guided Worcestershire to 174 for 6. Ben Dwarshuis launched a big finish and some late fireworks to contribute 35 runs in the last two overs, providing the Rapids with a defendable score.
Derbyshire’s Chase Falters Despite Madsen’s Lone Battle
In response, Derbyshire’s innings began poorly. Aneurin Donald, fresh from a record-fast fifty in his previous game, was dismissed for a duck. Tom Taylor struck early to remove Harry Came, and Ben Dwarshuis cleaned up Caleb Jewell, leaving the Falcons wobbling at 29 for 3.
Old hand Wayne Madsen again demonstrated his class with an unbeaten 77 from 53 balls, three of which were sixes. He attempted to get the chase going with assistance from Ross Whiteley, scoring 47 from 33 balls before teenage spinner Fateh Singh bowled Whiteley.
With 36 required off the last three overs, Martin Andersson pushed with a six off Khurram Shahzad. Tight death bowling from Dwarshuis, Taylor, and Shahzad limited Derbyshire to 162 for 6, short by 12 runs.
