A harrowing on-field collision in a Big Bash League (BBL) match between Sydney Thunder and Perth Scorchers on Friday night has seen both Cameron Bancroft and Daniel Sams ruled out for the remainder of the tournament. Both players suffered major injuries and while they were both discharged from Perth Hospital on Saturday afternoon, their futures within the BBL remain to be seen, in relation to their return to action depending on their respective recoveries.
Bancroft Suffers a Broken Nose and Fractured Shoulder

Western Australia batter Cameron Bancroft will not return to the current BBL season after being injured in the frightening collision with his teammate, Daniel Sams. The diagnosis for Bancroft includes a broken nose and a fractured shoulder after the collision. Bancroft, who hails from Perth, is relieved to be near his family during this recovery period.
After the incident, medical scans showed that Bancroft had suffered no other severe injuries, though the nature of his existing ones means he’ll be out of the rest of the tournament. Bancroft is expected to continue his recovery at home in Perth, assisted by family and the Thunder’s backroom staff, who stay behind in the city to aid him.
Sams to Sit Out for Additional Number of Matches

Dan Sams, who was one of the participants in the same crash, has been put on concussion protocols with no possibility of taking the field for at least 12 days. Now, it would be too early to say precisely when Sams would be available for the matches again. Doctors have diagnosed that Sam would not be able to play the remaining games of the BBL season.
Sams was taken to Perth after the accident, and his wife Dani has flown into Perth to see him through recovery. Unlike Bancroft who is supported by family in Perth, Sams is a different story. However, Thunder has managed to ensure medical staff are available for Sams’s recovery. When he will go back to Sydney will depend on how he continues to recover and further medical evaluations.
Thunder’s Support for Injured Players

Trent Copeland, Sydney Thunder General Manager stated to the press that both Bancroft and Sams were in good spirit despite the severe nature of the incident. “The CT scans have come back largely clear, ” said Copeland. “Cameron is with his family in Perth and we have worked to make all the right calls for Daniel ensuring he has what he needs for now and with his wife to be there to support him,”
Thunder’s backroom staff, in a show of solidarity, altered their travel plans to stay in Perth to assist the injured players. Copeland said that the Thunder is rallying around Bancroft and Sams while they recover and that the players’ positive attitude has brought a bit of relief amidst the challenging circumstances.
The Collision: A Disturbing Scene

A rather frightening incident marred the 16th over of the innings of Scorchers, in which Cooper Connolly hit one down the leg side off the Thunder bowler Lockie Ferguson. Sams from the infield rushed towards the ball; Bancroft, who charged in from the outfield, went mid-air for the catch with Sams and both players, after colliding, crashed onto the ground while their heads seemed to take a tremendous impact.
What next was a dramatic and emotional scene where the players of the Thunder were seen in a rush to reach their fallen teammates, signaling frantically for medical assistance. While Sams was stretchered off and taken away in a mini-ambulance, Bancroft who had blood oozing out from his nose could walk off with help from the physiotherapist of the team.
The play was halted for nearly 20 minutes while officials, including Thunder captain David Warner and coaching staff, deliberated over how to proceed. The decision to stop play reflected the seriousness of the accident and the need to ensure the players’ safety.
Thunder Push Through to Victory Amid the Shock
Despite the trauma of the incident, Sydney Thunder managed to secure a four-wicket victory over the Scorchers. Sherfane Rutherford played a big part in the chase, with a crucial six on the final over to send Thunder to a victory. “It was tough to watch, but it motivated us to win it for them,” Rutherford said, acknowledging the sight of Bancroft’s injury briefly caused him to look away from the field.
It was quite clear that the team was resolved to play for their injured teammates. It is evident that the collision’s emotional impact fuelled the team’s resolve to ensure a win at the end. Bancroft and Sams were always on the players’ minds as they played on during the rest of the match.
A Show of Appreciation to Medical Teams and Support

Sydney Thunder thanked all medical staff who responded immediately to the incident. The club thanked the medical staff from the Scorchers, Cricket Australia, and its own team for their swift and efficient actions in providing care for the injured players. Thunder also emphasized that they would continue to offer support to Bancroft and Sams as they recover, alongside their families, during this difficult time.
Tough Beginning to the BBL for Thunder
This is the second injury for Sydney Thunder, which has already had some bad luck earlier in the season. In the BBL season opener, Hilton Cartwright was stretchered off the field after a fielding mishap. Bancroft and Sams are now out of action, and Thunder will have to carry on without two of its main players. They will now focus on the Brisbane Heat game, hoping that the rest of the team will be able to carry on without them.
Sams and Bancroft will also need time to recover from the physical and emotional trauma of the incident. Sydney Thunder and their fans, as well as all cricket fans, will wait with bated breath for word of their rehabilitation and eagerly await their return to the playing field when the time comes.
