Players With Most World Darts Championship Titles

Along with the Premier League Darts and World Matchplay, the World Darts Championship is part of the Triple Crown.

The World Darts Championship is the most prestigious tournament in the sport of darts which is held annually. Organised by the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC), the championship begins in December and ends in January.

First staged in 1994, the competition has been held at Alexandra Palace in London, since 2008. The winner receives the Sid Waddell Trophy, named in honour of the darts commentator Sid Waddell. Along with the Premier League Darts and World Matchplay, the World Darts Championship is part of the Triple Crown.

Let us have a look at players with most World Darts Championship titles

1. Phil Taylor- 14 titles

Phil Taylor, also referred to as ‘The Power’, has a staggering 14 World Darts Championship.  He has 11 more World Championship titles than anyone else. 

Taylor is undoubtedly the greatest darts player ever.  He won his first world title in 1995 and then up until his retirement in 2018. He won it another 13 times, completely taking over the sport. 

In total, he featured in 25 tournaments, amazingly winning on 14 occasions. 

Taylor’s first World Championship victory came after beating Rod Harrington 29 years ago and he went on to build a long streak. 

He won in 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2002 before finally being dethroned by John Part in the final of 2003. The Brit would go on to win the next three tournaments. 

His last world title came 11 years ago as he beat Van Gerwen in the 2013 final. 

Taylor played in two more World Championship finals after that but he was beaten by Anderson in 2015 and then Cross in the final match of his career.

2. Michael van Gerwen- 3 titles

Van Gerwen,  who is considered one of darts’ greats, dominated the World Championship in the 2010s. 

The Dutch’s first world title came in 2014 and added another to his collection in 2017 before coming out on top again in 2019. 

His three wins came in five years and he is the player with the second most World Championship titles to his name. 

All of those victories came within his eight-year spell as World No.1.

3. John Part, Adrian Lewis, Gary Anderson, Peter Wright- 2 titles 

John Part, who is now a renowned darts commentator and analyst, is one of the four players to win two world titles. 

The Canadian won the World Championship crown in 2003 and 2008 before Adrian Lewis claimed two of his own consecutively in 2011 and defended his title in 2012. 

Gary Anderson managed to replicate Lewis as he won the tournament in 2015 and 2016. He lost to Price in the final of 2021. 

Former World No.1 Peter Wright is another player who tasted glory on two occasions-2020 and 2022.

Michael Smith and Luke Humphries are the last two champions of the World Darts Championship.
