Former Indian football captain Bhaichung Bhutia has urged for major changes in the country’s education system, highlighting the importance of a sports-focused curriculum to develop future world champions.
Bhaichung Bhutia Calls for Education Reform
Speaking at the Viksit Bharat Young Leaders Dialogue and National Youth Festival, Bhaichung Bhutia expressed concern that India’s education system focuses too much on academics and not enough on sports, which limits the country’s ability to produce world-class athletes.
“One view, out of all the discussions on taking sports forward, which I strongly feel is necessary, is that we need to collaborate with the Ministry of Education so that our education system supports sports policies in a significant way,” Bhaichung Bhutia said on the sidelines of the event on Saturday.
“Every child is trained to study and become a doctor or an engineer, but a more sports-friendly system must be in place. Only then will we be able to produce world champions in this country,” he said.
“The sports minister and education minister should sit together and have a word on this and a word on this and ensure that sports is one of the major subjects in the curriculum,” he added.
Praise for Government’s Initiative at Viksit Bharat Dialogue
Further, the former Indian football captain also lauded the government’s efforts in hosting the event.
“It is a great initiative by the government of India under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji about Viksit Bharat and it was great to discuss how sports can be taken forward in the country,” Bhutia said.
The event at Bharat Mandapam gathered over 3,000 young leaders from all over India for themed discussions and creative contests.
