The Davis Cup 2024 follows the thrilling 2024 US Open. The prestigious tennis competition stands out for its unique format by pitting national teams against one another, rather than individual competition.
The 2024 Davis Cup is the 112th edition of thournament between national teams in men’s tennis. It is part of the 2024 ATP Tour calendar. However, few big names in tennis would be absent from the tournament.
Here are big tennis players who will be missing from Davis Cup 2024.
- Rafael Nadal
Rafael Nadal was last seen on the tennis court at his final Olympic Games appearance in Paris 2024 where the Spaniard eventually lost to gold medalist Novak Djokovic in the second round and was beaten by the American doubles pair of Rajeev Ram and Austin Krajicek in the doubles quarters.
The 14-time Roland Garros champion has not featured in a tennis tournament since, opting out of the US Open despite being offered a wild card entry. The 22-time Grand Slam winner last contested at the Davis Cup in 2019. Notably, the 38-year-old has led Spain to four Davis Cup titles and will hand over the legacy to the very talented Carlos Alcaraz to lead the way.
- Jannik Sinner
Jannik Sinner just won the US Open 2024 title, however, he will miss the Davis Cup 2024. Notably, it was Jannik Sinner who led Italy to a historical triumph at the 2023 Davis Cup. Unfortunately the world number 1 will lose the opportunity to defend his throne as he has been rested ahead of the prestigious event.
Sinner anchored Italy’s victory over Australia as he defeated Alex de Minaur 6-3, 6-0 in Malaga, leading Italy to its first Davis Cup title since 1976.
- Frances Tiafoe
Frances Tiafoe’s name does not feature in the US Davis Cup 2024 roster. He had an excellent run at the US Open 2024 and fell just short of a maiden Grand Slam final after doing doen to fellow American Taylor Fritz in five sets in the semis.
At the 2023 Davis Cup, Tiafoe had a heated exchange in his final match with the officials, and furiously smashed his racquet into the ground. This offense cost the Americans a point and ultimately handed over their opponents an unassailable lead of 2-0.
- Lorenzo Musetti
Defending champions Italy will have to do without the services of Lorenzo Musett at Davis Cup 2024. He had an underwhelming US Open tournament losing to Brandon Nakashima in the third round. Musetti expressed the need to take a break after the intense tour he has undergone recently, including participation in the Paris Olympics.
The Italian has had a decent year overall, including a splendid Wimbledon campaign, wherein he progressed to the semis of a Grand Slam final for the first time.

- Taylor Fritz
Taylor Fritz reached the finals of US Open 2024, recording his career-best outing. He eventually lost to Jannik Sinner in straight sets to finish as runners-up. However, he will not feature in the Davis Cup 2024.
Recently US announced their squad including Brandon Nakashima, Mackenzie McDonald, Reilly Opelka, Austin Krajicek and Rajeev Ram. Fritz was conspicuously absent from the list.
The Americans are in a group that includes Chile, Germany and Slovakia and will compete in a round-robin format. The top two countries in each of four groups reach the Davis Cup Finals on Nov. 19-24 in Malaga, Spain.
