Biggest England ODI Win: Historic 342-Run Defeat Of South Africa

4 Min Read

Biggest England ODI Win: In a record-breaking display of dominance, England achieved the largest men’s ODI win in history, beating South Africa by a record 342 runs in the third ODI at Southampton. This record-breaking margin has broken all records and provided a historic milestone in England’s white-ball history.

Biggest England ODI Win of 343 runs against South Africa

The 342-run victory beats the earlier record by India, who defeated Sri Lanka by 317 runs in 2023 in Thiruvananthapuram. England’s mammoth score of 414 for 5 set the stage for the destruction, and South Africa managed a paltry 72 runs, disintegrating in just 20.5 overs.

South Africa’s Batting Collapse: A New Low

This loss also marks:

Second-lowest ODI total in South African history (behind 69 all out against Australia in 1993 at SCG). Their second-shortest completed innings in ODIs, which was over in just 20.5 overs. Fourth-lowest team total against England in ODIs.

It follows just two weeks on from their 276-run defeat by Australia at Mackay, which left them on the receiving end of two of the top seven heaviest ODI defeats in the space of 15 days.

England’s Highest ODI Score Against South Africa

England’s 414/5 is their new all-time highest ODI score versus South Africa, an improvement on their 399/9 at Bloemfontein in 2016. It was:

England’s 7th 400+ ODI score (only 8 of these have been achieved by South Africa)

South Africa’s 4th time they have leaked over 400 runs in an ODI (only 5 such occasions have seen this against West Indies)

Jacob Bethell: England’s Second-Youngest ODI Centurion

At only 21 years and 319 days, Jacob Bethell demolished a magnificent 110, the second-youngest England player to record an ODI hundred. Only David Gower had done it younger, recording two hundreds at 21 years and 309 days.

South Africa’s Collapse of Top-Order

There was a spectacular collapse in South Africa’s innings. Added just 24 runs before the sixth wicket fell, their lowest in an ODI ever. The quickest 6-wicket collapse vs England in men’s ODIs. One of just two instances of South Africa losing six wickets in the first 10 overs (the other against Afghanistan in 2023 at Sharjah).

Jofra Archer’s Spell of Destruction

Back to his best, Jofra Archer bowled a glorious spell:

4 wickets for just 5 runs in the first ten overs.

Among the best new-ball spells in ODI history. Only Makhaya Ntini’s 4 for 4 against Australia in 2006 has better figures in this phase (where ball-by-ball data is available).

Bowling Nightmare for South Africa on Debut and Beyond

Codi Yusuf conceded 80 runs in 10 overs, the most expensive ODI debut by a South African bowler. Nandre Burger, his new-ball accomplice, leaked 95 runs, the second-highest runs leaked by any South African in ODIs after Dale Steyn’s 96 vs Australia (2016).
