Argentine football powerhouse Boca Juniors has advanced to the quarterfinals of the Copa Libertadores after a tense penalty shootout victory over Uruguay’s Nacional. The crucial moment came when nineteen-year-old Valentin Barco, displaying remarkable composure, confidently converted the winning penalty kick, securing his team’s place in the competition’s last eight.
In the return fixture against Nacional, held at La Bombonera, Boca Juniors made a strong start with Miguel Merentiel finding the back of the net in the 12th minute. Despite Nacional’s Alfonso Trezza leveling the score, Boca Juniors regained the lead through Luis Advincula’s goal just after halftime. However, Ignacio Ramirez’s strike for Nacional in the 75th minute brought the match to a 2-2 draw, leading to a penalty shootout.
During the shootout, Nacional’s Ramirez and Daniel Bocanegra missed their spot-kicks, while Boca Juniors’ Guillermo Fernandez also had a miss. The spotlight then turned to Valentin Barco, who demonstrated maturity beyond his years by calmly converting the decisive penalty. His successful shot ensured Boca Juniors’ progression to the quarterfinals.
In other Copa Libertadores matches on the same day, Palmeiras secured their quarterfinal spot by triumphing over Brazilian rivals Athletico Paranaense, while Deportivo Pereira managed to progress by narrowly defeating Independiente del Valle.
Boca Juniors’ victory, with Barco’s standout performance, adds to the excitement of the Copa Libertadores tournament, showcasing the young talent and intense competition that define South American football.
