Brazil was held to a 0-0 draw by Colombia in the South American qualifiers on Sunday. They had won all of their previous nine qualifiers for the World Cup. But the canaries were nowhere near their best in Barranquilla on Sunday.
They had the best chances of scoring with Fred, Anthony, and Raphinha’s efforts failed to convert into a goal. Neymar was lively for Brazil throughout the first half, dropping deep and dictating his team’s play. However, the introduction of Raphinha for his second cap and Ajax’s Anthony very nearly bore fruit for Tite. Both men combined for a brilliant chance which resulted in a save. The Leeds winger’s fizzing cross was met by Anthony. However, Ospina was up to the task as he athletically saved Anthony’s effort.
The second half was an end-to-end affair between both Brazil and Colombia. It became a typical South American game with more than 25 fouls happening throughout the match.
Colombia had two chances on the goal in the second half. Juan Quintero’s well-hit drive from long range was saved by Alisson. Meanwhile, striker Raphael Borre blazed over with seconds to go.
It was the first time Brazil dropped points in the qualification campaign for the World Cup. They have won 9 matches and have drawn 1 in 10 matches. However, still, they are six points clear of second-placed Argentina, who defeated Uruguay 3-0 thanks to an inspired performance from Lionel Messi. Argentina themselves has opened a six-point gap between second place and third place.
Both Brazil and Argentina have a game in hand as their match was suspended during last month’s international break.
Brazil next plays Uruguay in the World Cup Qualifying campaign on Thursday night.
