Brisbane Heat vs Hobart Hurricanes: Zaman Khan Delivers Match-Winning Final Over

4 Min Read

Brisbane Heat vs Hobart Hurricanes: An exceptional final over performance by Zaman Khan propelled Brisbane Heat to a thrilling turnaround victory over Hobart Hurricanes, keeping the Big Bash League (BBL) season alive for the club and upending the finals series in the process.

Late Collapse Costs Hurricanes in Thrilling Chase

Chasing a target of 161 runs, the Hobart Hurricanes were heading towards an easy victory as they were at 124/2 with the need for the remaining 37 runs with plenty of wickets still in hand. But the match took a dramatic turn as they lost six wickets for the addition of 32 runs.

The pressure-filled final over saw Hurricanes needing six runs off six balls, and it was Zaman Khan, who bowled Nikhil Chaudhary on the penultimate ball, that really delivered a triumphing knock-out blow in seeing Brisbane Heat cross the line three runs short of victory.

Fielding Brilliance and Key Moments Swing the Game

Brisbane Heat also had Matt Renshaw to thank for some incredible fielding as he pulled off a magnificent stop at deep mid-wicket in the 18th over to save not just five precious runs, which ultimately swung the result in favor of a one-run victory.

Earlier, Heat could have been forced to pay for dropped opportunities. Ben McDermott got a lifeline when he was dropped on just one run, thanks to a dropped catch by Max Bryant, who gave his team a chance to recover through a 98-run partnership with Beau Webster. Ben McDermott was dropped again when he was on 38.

Labuschagne Sparks Collapse as Hurricanes Stunned

Despite the momunts that slipped away, Marnus Labuschagne played a major role in altering the course of the game by breaking the dangerous partnership, getting Webster in the 15th over. This sparked a major collapse, leaving the defending champions bewildered while the Brisbane Heat smelled victory.

Brisbane Heat vs Hobart Hurricanes: Brisbane Heat’s Inconsistent Batting Effort

In the initial match going on between Brisbane Heat and Hobart Hurricanes, Brisbane Heat were slow to gain momentum as they were made to bat first. Despite a promising start with 110/2, they succumbed horribly and scored less than expected.

Hurricanes displayed bowling strength by employing eight different bowlers, stifling Heat from beginning to the end of the innings. Though Nathan McSweeney and Matt Renshaw showed some resilience, holding off the peak attack from Heat proved detrimental to them. After that, with 37 off, Renshaw fell, and when McSweeney was given out early in the power play, Heat slipped to six wickets for 59.

Hurricanes’ Missed Opportunity in Finals Race

It proved to be a big loss for Hobart Hurricanes, who missed the opportunity to secure two home finals and open the door for the rivals like Perth Scorchers or Melbourne Stars to top up the Big Bash League table.

Despite a strong bowling display and control throughout much of the match, the Hurricanes were left to rue a late batting collapse and missed chances in the field.

Zaman Khan Emerges as the Hero

In a match filled with unexpected turns, what stood out is the ice-cool nerve shown by Zaman Khan in the final over. This not only helped Brisbane Heat win an important match but has also left the finals series in the BBL wide open.
