BCCI Introduces the Bronco Test for Indian Cricketers: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has rolled out a brand-new fitness challenge for players eyeing a spot in the Indian men’s national team – the Bronco Test.

What Is the Bronco Test

This test is designed to push athletes to their cardiovascular limits, building stamina and endurance that modern cricket demands. While Bronco is new to cricket, it’s been a staple in rugby for years as a high-intensity running drill. It measures aerobic endurance, speed, and how quickly an athlete can recover from fatigue.

With the jam-packed cricket calendar today, players need higher endurance levels than ever before. That’s exactly why the Bronco Test has made its way into the fitness assessments for Indian cricketers.

How the Bronco Test Works

The setup for Bronco is pretty simple, but don’t be fooled – it’s a tough one to ace.

Here’s how it goes:

  • Four markers are placed at 0m, 20m, 40m, and 60m from the starting point.
  • The player starts at the baseline (0m) and runs shuttle sprints:
    –  Run to the 20m marker and back.
    –  Run to the 40m marker and back.
    – Run to the 60m marker and back.

Completing these three sprints counts as one set, totaling 240 meters.

Each player has to finish five sets to complete the test, covering 1,200 meters in total. The entire time taken is recorded and used to gauge the player’s fitness levels.

What the Bronco Test Measures

The Bronco Test isn’t just about running – it’s about sustaining high-intensity effort over a longer period.

  • During batting, it mirrors the kind of endurance needed for repeated sprints between the wickets.
  • While fielding, it reflects the bursts of speed required to chase the ball, change direction quickly, and throw it back.

The test doesn’t just challenge the body – it also puts mental toughness to the test. Maintaining focus and pushing through fatigue is just as important as physical fitness.

Bronco Test vs. Yo-Yo Test

The Yo-Yo Test has long been the gold standard for cricket fitness, but Bronco is a little different.

  • The Yo-Yo test focuses on intermittent endurance with short rest breaks in between runs.
  • The Bronco Test, on the other hand, measures continuous aerobic endurance and stamina, with no rest periods allowed.

In short, if the Yo-Yo Test checks your stop-and-go fitness, the Bronco Test pushes you to maintain speed and effort without any pauses.
