Bruce Lee (November 27, 1940 – July 20, 1973) was a Hong Kong and American Martial Artist, Author, Stunt Performer and Philanthropist. He invented JeetKune Do, a hybrid martial arts system that incorporated aspects from many combat methods and is widely credited with establishing the foundation for modern mixed martial arts (MMA). By bridging the divide between East and West, Lee is regarded by critics, the press, and other martial practitioners as the most prominent martial artist in history and a 20th-century pop culture icon.

Lee’s father taught him the foundations of Wu-style t’ai chi ch’uan, which was his first introduction to martial arts. Throughout his teen years, Lee got embroiled in gang wars in Hong Kong, which frequently resulted in street brawls. Studying Wing Chun had the biggest impact on Lee’s martial arts growth. After losing to members of a rival gang, Lee was taught Wing Chun by Yip Man when he was 16 years old between late 1956 and early 1957.

Lee was well known for his physical energy and fitness, which he attained by following a committed exercise regimen to get as strong as he could. Following his 1965 contest with Wong Jack-man, Lee modified his approach to practising martial arts. Many martial artists at the time, in Lee’s opinion, did not devote enough time to physical preparation. Lee covered every aspect of complete fitness, including suppleness, aerobic capacity, strength training, and muscular endurance. He employed conventional bodybuilding methods to add some muscular bulk, but not too much because that could have affected his flexibility or speed.

Lee was originally introduced to the Hong Kong film business world by his father when he was a young actor. Lee was born in San Francisco and was raised in British Hong Kong. Yet, these weren’t movies about martial arts.
