With less than 48 hours until the third Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy begins, the Australians may be in for yet another difficult task as Ravichandran Ashwin returns to his favourite haunt. India will try to end the Australians’ four-match Test series with a draw and clinch another series victory. India is currently up 2-0 in the series. The depleted visitors will attempt to recover in the near future with a spot in the World Test Championship (WTC) final at stake.

Ashwin’s impressive stats at Holkar Stadium

No other bowler at the Holkar Stadium comes close to Ashwin’s impressive numbers, which speak volumes about him. Ashwin has taken 18 wickets in two Test matches at the venue, 11 more than Mohammed Shami, who is in second place. In October 2016 against New Zealand, the right-arm Tamil Nadu star took 13 wickets in his first outing at the location. In the first and second innings, he finished with scores of 81/6 and 59/7, respectively.

In November 2019, when he made his second appearance at the location, Ashwin took two and three wickets in the first and second innings, respectively, to bring his total to 18 wickets. It’s interesting to note that India won both of their Test matches at the Holkar Stadium, where Ashwin played, and they’ll aim for a similar result in the third Border-Gavaskar Trophy match.

Ashwin’s stats at Holkar Stadium

81/6 vs New Zealand (First Innings), October 2016

Australia looks for the last WTC spot

Despite being down 2-0 in the series, Australia can still advance to the World Test Championship final with a draw (WTC). Currently, a draw would result in them losing the series but would secure their place in the final, which begins on June 7 at the Oval. Steve Smith will captain the team in Skipper Cummins’ absence as the former is at home dealing with family matters.
