Bodo/Glimt continued their remarkable Champions League journey in stunning fashion last night. The Norwegian side managed to defeat Sporting in the first leg of their Round of 16 clash at home.

For those unaware, they are playing in the competition for the first time, and it was the minnows’ fifth straight win in the Champions League. What’s more interesting is the fact that Bodo/Glimt just secured a place in the knockout play-offs after finishing 23rd during the league phase.

Moreover, they had a rather disappointing start to their campaign and failed to win any of their first six matches. However, the Norwegian club managed to do what no one thought they could. They turned things around dramatically and secured wins over Manchester City and Atletico Madrid. Furthermore, they eliminated last season’s finalists, Inter Milan, in the play-offs.

Champions League produces another moment of magic

Sporting, dealing with injuries and suspensions, struggled to handle Bodo/Glimt’s relentless pressing and energetic style of play. The home side also showed remarkable patience while building attacks, which gradually wore their opponents down.

Sporting threatened early in the match when top scorer Luis Suarez saw his fifth-minute effort from a corner deflected over the crossbar. His early combination play with Francisco Trincao suggested promise for the visitors on the artificial pitch at Aspmyra Stadium.

Bodo/Glimt soon began to grow into the game. Jens Petter Hauge narrowly missed the target with a volley after a clever pass from Hakon Evjen, while Sporting goalkeeper Rui Silva later had to rush off his line to deny Evjen.

The breakthrough came in the 32nd minute when Sporting defender Georgios Vagiannidis was judged to have pushed Sondre Fet inside the box following a clever touch from Kasper Hogh. After a VAR check confirmed the decision, Fet calmly converted the penalty to give the hosts the lead.

Just before halftime, Ole Blomberg doubled Bodo/Glimt’s advantage. The winger controlled a deflected ball beautifully before finishing with composure, sending the home supporters into celebration.

Sporting showed improvement in the second half, with Suarez firing wide from inside the box and Trincao seeing a powerful effort blocked. However, Bodo/Glimt continued to threaten and extended their lead in the 71st minute when Kasper Hogh converted Jens Petter Hauge’s low cross.

Bodo/Glimt will now travel to Lisbon for the second leg next of this Champions League tie on Tuesday. The Jose Alvalade Stadium, which can hold almost the entire population of the Norwegian fishing town the club represents, will host the decisive match.
