The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has introduced a new policy that will permit Indian cricketers to take their families to just one match of the 2025 Champions Trophy. The move is part of a larger strategy to ensure that players stay concentrated on their performance, team bonding, and training.
The BCCI made the decision after a volatile period for the Indian team, which included a disappointing performance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024/25.
Limited Family Access for Players

Indian players who are involved in the Champions Trophy 2025 will be allowed to bring their families to watch only a single match in the tournament. The players must, however, obtain prior permission from the BCCI before taking their family members to the ground. The decision is viewed as a reaction to past controversies and a way to reassert a greater emphasis on the team’s goals.
The Context Behind the Decision
The BCCI took the step to limit family members’ presence in response to the team’s lackluster performance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy held in Australia, where India suffered a 1-3 loss. Reports circulating at the time indicated a gloomy environment inside the Indian dressing room, only added to by several off-pitch problems. These included Ravichandran Ashwin retiring, a player claiming the acting captaincy role, and the unexpected move of Rohit Sharma to remove himself from the lineup in the third match.
The poor performance of the team, along with controversies within, has led the Indian board to make efforts to restore discipline and concentration within the team. Family time, though necessary for the welfare of players, was considered a distraction during the team’s practice and matches.
The Champions Trophy 2025 Setup

India squad will be competing in all of their games at the Dubai International Stadium during Champions Trophy 2025. Matches of India during group stages would include Bangladesh, Pakistan, and New Zealand. The team, in case it advances to semi-finals and the final, has two more matches scheduled at the same stadium.
The decision to limit family attendance applies specifically to these matches, aiming to keep the players concentrated on the task at hand.
BCCI’s Broader Tour Guidelines
While the family allowance for the Champions Trophy is a relatively minor part of the new policies, the BCCI has also enforced stricter rules for players and their families during international tours:
– Family Stay Duration: For tours that are 45 days and more, families may stay only with players for up to a maximum of 14 days. For shorter tours, this could be reduced to only 7 days.
– Restrictions on Wives: Players’ wives are not permitted to stay with them throughout a tournament. It is one policy intended to make the players focus solely on the game.
– Team Travel Rules: There are rules under which all the players must travel by team buses together. It is intended to build stronger teams with better harmony among the members.
– Luggage Restrictions: The players will now have to bear any additional luggage charges over 150 kg, as the BCCI will not pay for these extra costs.
– No VIP Treatment for Managers: There are also specific guidelines for team management. For example, Gautam Gambhir’s personal manager cannot sit in the VIP box or ride on the team bus and must stay in a different hotel.
The Impact on Team Dynamics
The new BCCI policies are the board’s sure attempt at preventing the Indian side from being diffuse and divided as a team approach during their foreign sojourns. Prohibiting too much family time is also within the board’s intention to lessen distractions and forge greater cohesion amongst the team players, particularly coming off the strains experienced in the 2024/25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
These regulations can go a long way in influencing the way players juggle personal and professional lives while participating in international tournaments. Though the presence of family members is vital for players, the BCCI feels that restricted contact with loved ones will enable players to give their best for the team’s cause, leading to improved performances on the field.
The ruling will certainly be observed with interest by other cricket boards and teams, as it is a change in the way family life is dealt with in the elite cricket world.
