As per the regulations laid down by the International Cricket Council (ICC), any player who has been off the field for over a specified duration of time cannot participate in the batting innings until the required time has elapsed.
Fakhar was off the field for more than 25 minutes after his injury and, therefore, could not open the innings. Babar Azam and Saud Shakeel, however, started the innings for Pakistan. Saud Shakeel fared poorly as an opener, making a mere 6 runs off 19 balls before getting out.
Fakhar Zaman, in spite of being injured, came back to the field after the 33rd over and played at a later stage. He was able to make 24 runs off 41 balls, scoring 4 boundaries before getting out to New Zealand’s Michael Bracewell. His knock, as precious as it was, could not lead Pakistan to a winning chase, and they were bowled out for 260 in 47.2 overs, short of New Zealand’s score of 321 runs.
