This comes after star opener Fakhar Zaman suffered an untimely injury during their inaugural match against New Zealand, which resulted in Pakistan recording a massive 60-run defeat. With the team set to face the next test on February 23 IND vs PAK in Dubai, concerns over Fakhar Zaman’s fitness and readiness for the all-important game are increasing by the minute.

Fakhar Zaman injured himself while fielding in the second over of a game against New Zealand. Although he came back to bat later in the match, he looked uncomfortable when he was batting. Fakhar Zaman appeared to be discomforted, and there are concerns for the team management about his recovery for the next match against rivals India. The nature of the injury remains unclear but is causing visible extremes of pain for Zaman.

After Pakistan lost against New Zealand, skipper Mohammad Rizwan shared with the media the extent of Fakhar Zaman’s injury.

Rizwan disclosed that Fakhar was yet to get the results of his scan, and hence, the team was not yet aware of the severity of the injury. The captain mentioned, “Not sure yet, he has not got his result yet. He is in pain.” This put the fans and the team in suspense, as the fitness of their main opener is still not clear.

Fakhar Zaman’s Contribution to the Match Against New Zealand

Fakhar Zaman’s injury directly affected his performance in the match against New Zealand.

Although he was not stopped from playing the batting innings despite the injury, he was unable to play as an opening batsman. As per the regulations laid down by the International Cricket Council (ICC), any player who has been off the field for over a specified duration of time cannot participate in the batting innings until the required time has elapsed.

Fakhar was off the field for more than 25 minutes after his injury and, therefore, could not open the innings. Babar Azam and Saud Shakeel, however, started the innings for Pakistan. Saud Shakeel fared poorly as an opener, making a mere 6 runs off 19 balls before getting out.

Fakhar Zaman, in spite of being injured, came back to the field after the 33rd over and played at a later stage. He was able to make 24 runs off 41 balls, scoring 4 boundaries before getting out to New Zealand’s Michael Bracewell. His knock, as precious as it was, could not lead Pakistan to a winning chase, and they were bowled out for 260 in 47.2 overs, short of New Zealand’s score of 321 runs.

Will Fakhar Zaman Play in the IND vs PAK Match?

With Fakhar Zaman’s injury still being assessed, all eyes are on whether he will be able to play in Pakistan’s next match against India.

The February 23 match is likely to be a high-stakes affair considering the intense rivalry between the two sides.

His absence may prove to be a huge setback for Pakistan’s batting order, as Fakhar Zaman has been an integral component of their top order. As of now, there is no confirmation, but the team will probably wait for his scan report and evaluate his recovery in the next few days.

Gazing Ahead to the India Match As Pakistan looks to the next challenge, they will be hoping for Fakhar Zaman’s quick recovery but will also be keeping an eye on how they might need to change their lineup based on his fitness. Whether or not Fakhar features against India, Pakistan will want to bounce back from that opening loss to New Zealand and face their arch-nemesis with renewed vigor.

The situation is unfolding, and fans will be waiting with bated breath for more news as the Champions Trophy 2025 goes on.
