Arjun Erigaisi vs Karthikeyan Murali
The Chennai Grandmasters 2025 chess tournament has been a thrilling event so far, with intense matches and some brilliant moves. But one of the most exciting stories yet to unfold is the fierce battle for second place between two Indian grandmasters, Arjun Erigaisi and Karthikeyan Murali. While the tournament leader, Vincent Keymer from Germany, has already claimed the title with the final round still left, the real spotlight will be on these two Chennai stars as they battle it out for the runner-up spot.
Arjun Erigaisi has been impressing chess fans with his consistent play, and he holds a strong second position with 4.5 points as he steps into the final round. Despite facing tough opponents like Dutch grandmaster Anish Giri, Arjun managed to hold a draw in crucial rounds, keeping his hopes alive for a top finish.
Joining him in the second position is Karthikeyan, who has made a remarkable comeback in the tournament. After an impressive victory against fellow Indian grandmaster Vidit Gujrathi, Karthikeyan climbed up the rankings to join Arjun in second place with 4.5 points.
Now, both grandmasters step into the Chennai Grandmasters 2025 final round with 4.5 points each. What makes this more interesting is that in the final round, both players will face each other. This means there is no room for error or a shared position. Unless they end up having a draw, in which case there will be a tiebreak.
The Chennai Grandmasters is not just any chess event; it is India’s strongest classical chess tournament with a prize pool of Rs 1 Crore. It offers not only prize money but also valuable FIDE points that could help players qualify for the 2026 Candidates Tournament, a stepping stone to the World Chess Championship.
While Vincent Keymer has already secured the title, the battle for second place between Arjun Erigaisi and Karhikeyan Murali is a must-watch. The final round takes place on 15 August 2025 at 12:15 PM GMT+5:30.
