The People’s Republic of China continued their domination clinching a fourth consecutive BWF Sudirman Cup title in Xiamen on Sunday (4 May). With this win, the host extended their record of winning the most tournament titles to 14.
In a repeat of the last final in 2023, China defeated Republic of Korea 3-1 with women’s doubles Olympic silver medallists Liu Shengshu and Tan Ning claiming the decisive rubber.
Feng Yanzhe and Huang Dongping gave the lead to China in the mixed doubles by beating Seo Seung-jae and Chae Yu-jung 21-16, 17-21, 21-15.
An Se-young, the reigning world number one and Olympic champion in women’s singles, put the Koreans on the board with a 21-17, 21-16 win over Wang Zhiyi.
Wang was picked above Chen Yufei to face An and she led 11-10 at the first mid-game interval, but the world number one went 17-14 ahead before her Chinese opponent drew level at 17-all. An then won four straight points to take the opener.
Wang showed a valiant fight, but An was too strong and prevailed in 57 minutes as she ended the week without dropping a game. She extended her winning run to 25 matches out of 25 played this calendar year.
“Happy that I could win for the team,” An, who has only dropped 3 games in 25 matches in her perfect start to the year, told BWF. “This is my fourth Sudirman Cup and finally I could win a match in the final. I was able to overcome the pressure. In a team event the pressure is different from an individual tournament.”
Men’s singles world number one Shi Yuqi restored China’s advantage with a comprehensive 21-5, 21-5 win over Jeon Hyeok-jin. Yuqi had won all three of their previous meetings, and his attacking power was simply too much for Jeon.

Liu and Tan sealed the title against Baek Ha-na and Lee So-hee. The Koreans had won five of their eight previous meetings, including their last clash in the semi-finals at the 2024 World Tour Finals.
Baek and Lee showed superb defence to stay in touch with the Chinese. But they could not resist for long with the Chinese duo taking the win 21-14, 21-17.
The win solidifies China’s dominance in Surdirman Cup as the the most successful nation with 14 titles, followed by South Korea with four trophies.
