The Italian Open will get a new women’s singles champion come May 15, Thursday. 

World number three Coco Gauff takes on Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen in the semi-final of the tournament.

Defending champion Iga Swiatek bowed out of the competition mid-way, paving way for a new title contender. 

Gauff started her clay-court campaign in an impressive manner, reaching the final of the Madrid Open. However, she lost to world number one Aryna Sabalenka in the summit clash.

At the ongoing Italian Open, the 21-year-old defeated Emma Raducanu and seventh seed Mirra Andreeva to reach the women’s singles semi-finals for a second consecutive year.

Meanwhile, Zheng reached the semi-final in Rome after beating Sabalenka in the semi-final. She defeated the Beralusian for the first time in her career on Wednesday, ending her six-match losing streak against the world number one with an impressive straight-sets win to make the last four at the Italian Open for the very first time.

Coco Gauff vs Zheng Qinwen head-to-head

Gauff and Zheng have faced each other twice, with the American winning both encounters in 2024.

In the Italian Open quarter-finals last May, Gauff prevailed 7-6 6-1 against Zheng.

They met again in the final of the WTA Finals in November in a three-hour epic as Gauff battled from a set down to win 3-6 6-4 7-6.

In doing so, Gauff became the youngest WTA Finals champion at 20 years.
