Craig Alexander Young, an Irish cricketer, was born on April 4, 1990. Young bowls right-arm medium pace and bats right-handed. Young made his first-class debut for Ireland against Scotland on May 26, 2013. In September 2014, he faced Scotland in his first One Day International, picking up 5 wickets for 45 runs. On June 18, 2015, he played in his first Twenty20 international match against Scotland. Young was one of the 19 players that received a central contract with Cricket Ireland in December 2018 for the upcoming season. In January 2020, Cricket Ireland awarded central contracts to nineteen players, including him. This was the first year that all contracts were given out on a full-time basis.
Craig Young, one of many players to come out of Ireland’s strong Under-19 sides from the early 2010s, destroyed Scotland in Malahide in September 2014 to become the ninth bowler to take a five-for on a men’s ODI debut. Given that Young had recently lost his county contract with Sussex and converted it into a Cricket Ireland central deal, it was a well-timed performance. Young soon found himself being compared to Boyd Rankin due to both his Londonderry roots and dangerous pace and bounce. In another unfortunate sense, his career has paralleled Rankin’s in that he has developed the injury bug. Young has only started for less than half of Ireland’s ODIs since his debut due to a string of fitness problems. There haven’t been many more spectacular statistics performers for Ireland when he’s been able to play, though. Among Ireland’s best ODI wicket-takers, he has one of the highest strike rates and lowest bowling averages.
