Legendary South African fast bowler Dale Steyn took a sharp jab at Chennai Super Kings’ decision to send Ravindra Jadeja and R Ashwin in to bat early during their IPL 2025 match against Rajasthan Royals on Tuesday.

Dale Steyn Questions CSK’s Strategy After Early Collapse

After CSK lost a few quick wickets, they sent the two all-rounders to bat ahead of Dewald Brevis and MS Dhoni. But the plan didn’t work – Jadeja scored only 13, and Ashwin managed just 1. Reacting on social media, Steyn mocked the strategy with a cheeky post: “CSK 3 down and they send 2 bowlers to bat. Sometimes I feel their math is not mathing,” he wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Talking about the match, MS Dhoni on Tuesday gave advice to young Indian batters who have done well in the IPL. He told them to stay calm under pressure and focus on being consistent if they want to reach their full potential.

Dhoni’s team, Chennai Super Kings, lost to Rajasthan Royals by six wickets in their second-last match of the season. The loss kept CSK at the bottom of the 10-team IPL table.

Rajasthan Royals ended their disappointing 2025 IPL season on a positive note, thanks to a solid 57-run innings by young talent Vaibhav Suryavanshi.

When asked about his advice to the young Indian batters who have stood out this IPL season, MS Dhoni emphasized the importance of staying calm and consistent, especially under pressure.

“They have to try for the consistency, but if you are looking for 200-plus strike rate then consistency is hard to get …. they have the ability to hit sixes at any stage,” Dhoni said, pointing out the challenge of balancing aggression with stability.

He also encouraged youngsters to keep learning and not get overwhelmed by rising expectations.

“Don’t take pressure, when the expectations rise … learn from senior players and coaching staff .. it’s about reading the game … this would be my advice to all the youngsters who have done well.”

Reflecting on the loss to Rajasthan Royals, Dhoni admitted that losing early wickets hurt CSK’s chances.

“If you look at the amount of runs we had put on the board, it was very good, but you got to see the wickets column as it puts pressure on the lower-middle order that you might not bat 20 overs.”

He praised Dewald Brevis for his aggressive approach, although noted there was still room for improvement.

“I think Brevis’ innings was very nice, he was taking chances and I feel run-rate was nice, that’s the phase we want to improve slightly. I felt the run-rate was up but where we lacked was losing 1-2 extra wickets at the start.”

On the bowling front, Dhoni singled out a promising pacer for his impressive performance.

“(Pacer) Kamboj is good, he gets a lot of movement, his balls hit you harder than what you might expect, he’s good … he’s done well, bowling three overs in the powerplay is tough.”

Meanwhile, Rajasthan Royals skipper Sanju Samson reflected on a difficult season after his team finished with just four wins in 14 matches.

“The way people are looking at powerplay. There is not much difference in quality of teams. The margin of error in winning and losing is so less. We have to sit back and do a proper review,” Samson said, admitting mistakes were made and the team needs to reassess.
