Gus Mears, an English businessman who had earlier purchased the Stamford Bridge athletics stadium with the intention of converting it into a football field, formed Chelsea in 1905. His initial plan was to rent it to an established team, but after talks with Fulham FC fell through, he had the bright idea to form a new team.
