When the two teams meet on Sunday at the Emirates, Mikel Arteta thinks Arsenal can psychologically outpace Liverpool by creating a 14-point buffer between them.
Although they have failed to score in the last six games, Arsenal has only won one of the last 19 meetings between the two teams in all competitions. They have risen to the top of the Premier League with a pace and rhythm akin to Jürgen Klopp’s team, who have had a rocky start and are currently ranked ninth. Despite the fact that Liverpool has the upper hand, Arteta acknowledged that winning would give Arsenal a significant advantage over their former rivals.
He responded, “Absolutely. “Psychologically, it’s also quite crucial when you gain momentum and are on a strong run and can leave an opponent as far [behind] as possible.”
The deficit, however, was explicitly denied by Arteta as being insurmountable. You’ve seen a lot of [turnarounds] in this league, so we are making assumptions based on that. “Beating them will be difficult, but we must succeed if we want to be 14 points in front of them. We’ll try it out.
Despite Arsenal’s thrilling victory over Spurs last Saturday, there is a sense that Liverpool would be a more telling victory considering the pressure Klopp’s team has put on Arsenal. Last month, Arsenal lost at Old Trafford in a game of equal importance, and Arteta implored his team to perform bravely if they wanted a better result this time.
He claimed that if you don’t have that element, you are afraid. You must genuinely believe you can go there, triumph, and play against those teams if you want to win those games. The worst enemy is fear, especially when facing elite opponents who routinely use it to their advantage to win football games.
You cannot enter Sunday’s game with any of that, just as we did not when we faced the Spurs.
Oleksandr Zinchenko’s physical condition is still in doubt. His replacement at left-back, Kieran Tierney, was replaced after 70 minutes of Thursday’s Europa League victory against Bod/Glimt with a likely eye on the Liverpool match because he skipped training on Wednesday.
