Shinty players got together in 1865 at the Clinton Arms on Shakespeare Street in Nottingham. Instead, the suggestion made by J. S. Scrimshaw to play association football was accepted, and Nottingham Forest Football Club was established. At the same meeting, it was decided that the club would buy twelve “Garibaldi Red” tasselled caps in honour of the commander of the Italian “Redshirts” warriors. As a result, the club’s official colours were chosen. The English Football League’s oldest club, according to Nottingham Forest, is still in existence.

Forest lost in the 1900 and 1902 FA Cup semi-finals. They came in fourth in the 1900–01 Football League and fifth the following year. Then the club began to descend the table. In 1905–06, Forest was demoted for the first time. Grenville Morris recorded his first of five seasons as the team’s leading scorer before amassing 213 goals to hold the record for the most goals scored by a single club.

Afterwards, there is a decline (1950–74)

They received a fast promotion back two years later after setting a record with 110 goals in the 1950–51 campaign. In 1957, they earned their First Division status back.
