Hamilton closes on Alonso
Hamilton with a runner-up finish at the Spanish GP closed the gap between him and Alonso. The gap between second-placed, Alonso and third-placed, Hamilton is just 12 points now. Hamilton was 19 points behind Alonso before the Monaco GP while the gap before the Spanish GP increased to 24 points.
Alonso had some opportunities to have a better finish. He finished 7th behind teammate Stroll. At one point the gap between him and Stroll was reduced to just two seconds. On his radio, he told his team that he would not go for the overtake. Alonso said to his team on the radio that he would take “zero risks.” While speaking to the media at the end of the race, Alonso said “It was 10 laps to the end, I had a little bit fresher tyres – but like one or two tenths faster than him, no more than that.” He further said, “For us it’s the same: sixth and seventh, and seventh and sixth.” A sixth-place finish would have extended the gap between him and Hamilton to 14 points.
