The FIDE Women’s World Chess Cup 2025 is currently underway in Batumi, Georgia. The tournament continues the tradition of attracting the world’s top female chess players for one of the sport’s most prestigious knockout tournaments.
It’s being held at the Grand Bellagio Hotel & Casino and started on July 5 and will conclude on July 29. This third edition of the FIDE Women’s World Chess Cup 2025 features a record 107 participants from 46 countries, all competing for a share of the massive $691,250 prize pool and qualification spots for the Women’s Candidates Tournament.
The FIDE Women’s World Chess Cup 2025 is filled with exceptionally strong chess players, with many of the world’s highest-rated grandmasters in contention. Key players to watch are:
1. Lei Tingjie (China, GM, 2552): A consistently top performer and one of the highest-rated players in the field, Lei is a favorite for the title.
2. Zhu Jiner (China, GM, 2547): Another top Chinese contender, Zhu has shown remarkable form on the international stage.
3. Tan Zhongyi (China, GM, 2546): The 2017 Women’s World Champion, Tan, remains a formidable force at the FIDE Women’s World Chess Cup 2025.
4. Humpy Koneru (India, GM, 2543): India’s top female player and a world title challenger, Humpy’s experience makes her a strong candidate.
5. Anna Muzychuk (Ukraine, GM, 2535): A two-time world rapid and blitz champion, Anna’s versatility is a major asset in knockout formats.
6. Aleksandra Goryachkina (FIDE, GM, 2533): Winner of the 2023 Women’s World Cup and one of the world’s most consistent top players, Goryachkina is a key favorite to win the FIDE Women’s World Chess Cup 2025.
7. Kateryna Lagno (FIDE, GM, 2515): Known for her speed chess prowess, Lagno is always a threat in both classical and rapid tiebreaks.
Other Notable Players: Nana Dzagnidze (Georgia), Mariya Muzychuk (Ukraine), Harika Dronavalli (India), Vaishali Rameshbabu (India), Polina Shuvalova (FIDE), Alexandra Kosteniuk (Switzerland), and Yuliia Osmak (Ukraine) make an elite group of contenders.
Both previous champions, Alexandra Kosteniuk (2021) and Aleksandra Goryachkina (2023), are in the field, adding to the tournament’s competitiveness and prestige.
