How soon will the World Cup begin?
On Sunday, November 20, host nation Qatar will officially start off the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
The competition was originally scheduled to start on Monday, November 21, but FIFA modified the date to make sure the host country received the attention it deserves.
World Cup 2022 Opening Match
The opening match of the tournament will take place on November 20 at 7 p.m. local time (11 a.m. ET/ 4 p.m. GMT) in Al Bayt Stadium between hosts Qatar and Ecuador.
It is customary for the host nation to participate in the tournament’s opening game. And when the calendar for the 2022 FIFA World Cup was announced back in April, there were questions because it did not feature the customary opener game involving the host nation Qatar. Instead, according to the schedule at the time, Qatar was scheduled to play the second of four games on Monday, November 21, after Senegal vs. the Netherlands.
FIFA announced the modification in the schedule that would assure Qatar will start the tournament a day sooner only three months before it began.
World Cup 2022 Opening Ceremony
The opening ceremony will now take place the day before the Qatar vs. Ecuador tournament opener, which has been shifted from Saturday, November 19, to Sunday, November 20.
The 2022 World Cup mascot, songs from the soundtrack, and the competition’s official anthem are anticipated to play during the ceremony.
In April 2022, the song Hayya Hayya (Better Together), performed by American recording artist Trinidad Cardona, Nigerian musician Davido, and Qatari vocalist AISHA, was made available as the first single from the official FIFA World Cup soundtrack. On the soundtrack, Lil Baby has a single as well, and more are anticipated.
La’eeb was unveiled as the official World Cup mascot at the World Cup Draw in April 2022. The Arabic word “la’eeb” denotes a very skillful player.
Finals of World Cup
The 2022 World Cup final will begin at 6 p.m. local time (10 a.m. ET / 3 p.m. GMT) on Sunday, December 18 at Lusail Iconic Stadium.
The World Cup final falls on the same day as Al-Yawm al-Watani li-Qaar, or Qatar’s National Day, which commemorates the country’s union in 1878.
