Chelsea Fall To Flamengo 3-1 In Club World Cup Chaos: Red Cards, Comebacks, And South American Dominance

Flamengo might be the South American team but it is Chelsea who brought the spicy flavour to the mix. Chelsea’s midfield of Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo already know what South American football is all about but the whole Chelsea team were ready to give Flamengo a taste of their own medicine.

The game had a chaotic feel to it throughout the match as no team could stamp their foot on the authority and although it would have been expected for Chelsea to dominate the game but it was hard for the London team to keep the ball as Flamengo were aggressive on their pressing and were ready to fight for each and every ball. 

The 1st half started with a few half-chances for Chelsea and then some for Flamengo as Robert Sanchez committed repeated errors in playing out from the back.

This was Neto’s 2nd goal in the tournament and he looks dangerous whenever he has the ball. 

After the goal, the game became a battlefield as there were many different occasions where the referee had to douse the situation. Moises Caicedo, Pedro Neto and Liam Delap received yellow cards in the 1st half for reckless challenges.

The 2nd half started with a more calmness among the Chelsea team, Enzo Maresca half-time team talk had soothed down the nerves and Chelsea looked more like themselves in the first 15 minutes of the second half but then came the Flamengo storm.

Henrique came on at the 56th minute and after just 6 minutes, he brought back Flamengo into parity. And 3 minutes later, Danilo scored from a corner to make the score 2-1. 

In a matter of 3 seconds, the game had turned around completely. To make things worse for Chelsea, birthday boy Nicolas Jackson decided to go in a dangerous tackle that caught a Flamengo player high on the foot near the shin, The referee saw the severity of the tacle and straight-up produced a red card.

In 6 minutes, Chelsea went 2 goals and 1 man down to Flamengo. After that it looked difficult for Chelsea to create chances and score without a striker as Delap had earlier been substituted for Jackson.

And in the 83rd minute, Wallace Yan thumped the final nail in the coffin when he finished an easy tap-in after a series of beautiful play from the right-wing.

Flamengo won the match 3-1 and maintained the south American streak of not losing to European clubs at the Club World Cup.
