Formula 1 has made a huge announcement regarding the change in date for the Canadian Grand Prix, marking significant adjustments to its race calendar starting from 2026.
The Canadian Grand Prix will be staged in late May rather than early June from 2026 as part of Formula 1’s efforts to curb carbon emissions.
Historically, the Montreal Formula 1 race has been held during the month of June. The decision to adjust the race date has been taken in agreement with various Canadian stakeholders, including race promoters and governmental bodies.
This initiative is part of Formula 1’s commitment to environmental sustainability, by minimizing the number of transatlantic flights required for teams and equipment, thereby cutting down on carbon emissions. The Canadian Grand Prix is now set to be closely held with the Miami Grand Prix, with an aim to realize its pledge to become net zero by 2030.
F1 president and chief executive officer Stefano Domenicali said: “We applaud the tremendous effort from all involved to accelerate the temporary build of the event, to be ready to host the Formula 1 community earlier than in the past.
“The change will make the future flow of our calendar not only more sustainable, but logistically more sensible for our teams and personnel.
“Our Net Zero by 2030 commitment continues to be a priority for us as a sport.”
The contract between Formula 1 and Canadian runs until 2031. The Canadian authorities had in the past been reluctant to adjust their date, arguing that they needed the extra time to prepare the track after the long winter. But a new promoter, which took over this year, has backed the change.
Jean-Philippe Paradis, chief executive officer of Montreal race organisers the Octane Racing Group, said: “This change in the schedule is a major step in our commitment, as well as Formula 1’s, toward a more sustainable future.”

The adjustment in the Canada’s date is the latest in a series of steps taken by F1 to redesign the race calendar with the aim of greater sustainability.
They have earlier moved the Japanese Grand Prix from October to April to make it closer to Australia and China races. The Azerbaijan event was moved to the end of the European season before Singapore, and brought Qatar nearer to Abu Dhabi at the end of the year.
