The wait is finally over for Formula 1 in South Korea! After more than ten years, Formula 1 is finally returning to South Korea, ending a long wait filled with hope and anticipation. The return is set to happen not at the old Yeongam circuit but at a fresh new venue called the AMG Speedway in Yongin, near the capital Seoul. This event will take place on October 12, 2025, marking an exciting comeback for F1 fans in the country.
Formula 1 in South Korea
Formula 1 in South Korea was held from 2010 to 2013 at the Korea International Circuit in Yeongam. Although the races were thrilling and included memorable moments like Fernando Alonso’s first win in 2010, the event struggled with challenges such as location issues and financial difficulties, which meant the race was dropped after 2013. But now, a new chapter begins with a street race proposal on the table, aligning with modern Formula 1 trends focusing on city-based events.
How Was This Made Possible?
The mayor of Incheon, Yoo Jeong-bok, has been actively pushing for this return of Formula 1 in South Korea. He highlighted Incheon’s many advantages, including its international airport, strong transport links, and luxury accommodations, making it an ideal city to host a grand prix. The plan to host the race in Incheon also fits well with Formula 1 owner Liberty Media’s vision of more street races in exciting urban locations.
Valterri Bottas Returns
Adding to the excitement, Valtteri Bottas, a popular F1 driver and 10-time Grand Prix winner, is involved in promotional events to celebrate the return of Formula 1 in South Korea. Bottas will be driving the team’s W13 car at the Peaches Run Universe 2025 event, a car culture festival in Yongin, aimed at engaging fans and building enthusiasm ahead of the race. Bottas shared fond memories of racing in South Korea in 2013 and is looking forward to bringing Formula 1 back to passionate fans.
The return of Formula 1 in South Korea is not only a significant moment for motorsport fans but also a chance for the country to showcase its growing love for the sport. The countdown to October 12 begins, and the excitement is building as Formula 1 makes a thrilling return to South Korea for the first time in more than a decade.
