1. Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore

In the 2004 Athens Olympics, Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore made history by winning a silver medal in Men’s Double Trap Shooting. The competition had a tough qualification round of 150 targets, and he faced pressure and finished fourth and advanced to the final. The final was thrilling as Rat hore hit target after target and secured 42 out of 50 narrowly missing gold but winning the silver. This achievement made him the first Indian to win an individual Olympic silver medal post-independence.

2. Abhinav Bindra

Back in 2008 in Beijing, at the Summer Olympics. It was the Men’s 10m Air Rifle final and Abhinav Bindra was about to make history. The competition had two parts: qualification and final. In the qualification round, each shooter took 50 shots at a target 10 meters away. Bindra did well and finished fourth with a score of 596 securing a spot in the eight-person final. The final was tense. Each shot was crucial. He started strong with an impressive shot of 10.7. As the competition went on, he stayed focused and consistently scored high in the 10s. It all came down to the last shot, where he was tied with Finnish shooter Henri Häkkinen. Bindra took the final shot and scored 10.8 the highest in the final. The crowd erupted in cheers as Bindra won the gold medal, making it India’s first-ever individual Olympic gold.

3. Gagan Narang

Gagan Narang won an Olympic medal, a bronze in the 10m air rifle event at the 2012 London Games. In that competition, he faced a lot of pressure but stayed focused, shot well in the final round, and secured India’s first medal of the Games. He finished third behind shooters from Romania and Italy. In other Olympics, in 2008 Beijing, he missed the final in the 10m air rifle, finishing 9th. He also competed in the 50m rifle prone and three positions events but did not win a medal. In the 2016 Rio Olympics, he did not get an individual medal but finished 23rd, 13th, and 33rd in different events. He won multiple medals at the World Championships and Commonwealth Games which included four golds in the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi.

4. Vijay Kumar

In 2012, at the Royal Artillery Barracks in London, former Subedar Major Vijay Kumar made history in the 25m Rapid Fire Pistol event. The competition demanded lightning-fast precision, with shooters firing five shots at five targets in just eight seconds. Clad in his army uniform, he faced tough competition from the world’s best marksmen. As the rounds progressed, the pressure intensified, and in the final, he found himself in a neck-and-neck battle with China’s Pang Wei. Every shot carried the weight of a nation’s expectations. In the intense climax, Kumar displayed nerves of steel, holding his fire slightly longer than his opponent. His final shot, a perfect 10 secured him a silver medal, narrowly losing to Cuba’s Luis Pupo by just two points. Despite the close call, the crowd erupted in cheers. Kumar won India’s first Olympic medal in a pistol event.
