Indonesia fast bowler Gede Priandana has made cricket history during the first T20I against Cambodia in Bali on Tuesday, December 23. The 28-year-old right-arm pacer produced an extraordinary over, taking five wickets in a single over, a feat never before achieved in T20 international cricket.

The Match-Changing Over

The historic moment came in the 16th over of Cambodia’s innings. Chasing a target of 168, Cambodia were at 106 for 5 after 15 overs, still in the contest with five wickets in hand. Priandana was brought into the attack for the first time, and his introduction completely turned the game in Indonesia’s favour.

Five Wickets in One Over

Bowling his very first over, Priandana dismissed three batters on three consecutive balls to complete a hat-trick. After a dot ball, he removed two more batters to finish an unbelievable five-wicket over. Cambodia managed just one run in the entire over, which came from a wide.

Cambodia was eventually bowled out for 107, losing the match by 60 runs while chasing 168. Priandana had also opened the batting for Indonesia but scored only six runs. His bowling, however, stole the spotlight and sealed a historic win for his team.

Before this match, Priandana’s best bowling figures were 4 for 8 against Myanmar, achieved last month in a rain-shortened 10-overs-a-side game.

Gede Priandana – First Bowler to Take Five Wickets in a Single Over in T20Is

With this performance, Gede Priandana became the first bowler in T20 international cricket history to take five wickets in a single over. No male or female cricketer had ever done this at the international level.

Before Gede Priandana, the rare feat of five wickets in one over had been recorded only twice in men’s T20 cricket, and both times in domestic tournaments.

The first known instance was during the 2013-14 season when Bangladesh bowler Al-Amin Hossain achieved the feat while playing for UCB-BCB XI in the Victory Day T20 Cup against Abahani Limited.

Breaking the Four-Wicket Barrier

Previously, taking four wickets in a single over in international cricket was considered extraordinary and had occurred 14 times. Gede Priandana’s achievement broke that long-standing barrier, setting a new record in the international game.

A few notable bowlers who have taken four wickets in a single over in T20Is include:

  • Lasith Malinga (Sri Lanka) vs New Zealand, 2019

  • Rashid Khan (Afghanistan) vs Ireland, 2019

  • Curtis Campher (Ireland) vs Netherlands, 2021

  • Jason Holder (West Indies) vs England, 2022

Lasith Malinga is also known for his multiple hat-tricks in international cricket, including a famous four-ball spell against New Zealand in 2019.

Gede Priandana’s incredible over will be remembered as one of the most remarkable moments in T20 international cricket history.
