George Russell has made his stance clear. Despite ongoing speculation around Max Verstappen and a potential Mercedes switch, the British driver has declared he will remain with Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team in 2027.

The statement comes at a time when Verstappen continues to be linked with a move, especially after Red Bull’s struggles under the new 2026 regulations and Mercedes’ strong start to the season.

George Russell’s Stance on His F1 Future

There have been a lot of conversations about George Russell’s future since Red Bull started experiencing their decline in performance in 2025, and there began the reports that Max Verstappen was looking at other options to race for.

Many believed he could land at  Mercedes, and lots of speculation arose about which driver would have to leave the team to make way for him, even though Russell signed an extension with Mercedes.

There has been continued speculation about George Russell possibly leaving, as all the buzz surrounding rising star Kimi Antonelli has been added to the equation.

The basic assumption is: if Max Verstappen joins Mercedes, one of the existing drivers has to go, and George Russell has consistently been mentioned as a potential candidate to be that driver.

But George Russell has now made it clear that he has no intention of leaving Mercedes anytime soon.

George Russell told the media, “Yeah, it is pretty much that you hit the metrics and move on.”

“So I will be here next year with the team, and there is not really much more to say.

“It is a multi-year deal, it is numerous years as we said last year.

“Often in a lot of these contracts, even if the metrics are not hit, if things are happy, then you continue. But as I said, the metrics will very likely be hit.”

What this means for F1 Mercedes’ driver lineup

George Russell’s comments effectively shut down immediate doubts over his place in the team, even as Max Verstappen’s name continues to hover around Mercedes conversations.

With the team currently enjoying strong form and adapting well to regulation changes, stability in the driver lineup could be key.

George Russell’s positioning himself as a long-term option signals confidence, both in his performance and in the team’s direction.

For now, the message is simple. Regardless of title outcomes or external pressure, George Russell sees his future with Mercedes beyond 2026.
