George Russell, one of Formula 1’s brightest and most consistent talents, has revealed why he chose to delay the signing of his 2026 contract with Mercedes during the F1 summer break. With his current deal expiring at the end of 2025, the Brit has made it clear that this pause was a deliberate decision, a chance to press the reset button and make sure everything is perfectly aligned before committing to a new deal.
George Russell Opens Up About His Contract
Russell explained that the summer break was a precious time for him, not just to relax but to finely weigh what he wants from his future, both on and off the track. In his own words, “I definitely wanted to take the summer to really think about my future, because it’s obviously important for everybody when you’re discussing the coming years.” The discussions with Mercedes, led by team principal Toto Wolff, were open and ongoing, yet Russell prioritized careful consideration over rushing any agreement.
Despite the delay, there is no looming pressure from either side. In fact, both Russell and the team are taking their time to ensure that the terms are right. “There’s no major time pressure from my side, there’s no major time pressure from the team’s side, so I just want to ensure it’s done right, and not done quickly,” George Russell said.
Toto Wolff’s Relaxing Words
Toto Wolff has echoed this sentiment, describing the contract talks as more of a formality than a battle. He confirmed that everything is “positively moving in the right direction,” with just the finer details, like optimizing George Russell’s performance, marketing commitments, and travel logistics, left to finalize. Wolff stated, “George is a Mercedes driver and Kimi Antonelli as well. They are part of the team, part of the structure. Where we are is formalities.”
Why The Delay?
A significant factor in the delayed signing was Mercedes’ earlier contract conversations with Max Verstappen, which kept the kart somewhat in suspense. However, Verstappen’s recent decision to stay with Red Bull has cleared the air and strongly pointed towards George Russell and his young teammate, Kimi Antonelli, remaining with Mercedes for 2026.
George Russell Wants To Win With Mercedes
Russell also addressed speculation around the length of the potential new deal, saying it wasn’t a sticking point. Instead, he emphasized that contract length has pros and cons, but “this season more than ever proves, it always comes down to performance.” It’s clear that winning races and championships is at the heart of his contract priorities. As he put it, “The truth is I want to win with Mercedes; I want to win a World Championship, and that is my number one goal.”
At 27 years old, George Russell is aware that his career is at a pivotal stage. He is keen to remain loyal to Mercedes, a team that has supported him since his early days, but he insists that “everything has to be right and we’re all heading in the right direction.” Whether the new deal covers multiple years or just one season, it’s the alignment of ambitions and mutual trust that Russell values most.
So, while the contract signing might be delayed, the intent is crystal clear: George Russell is staying, but only when everything is fully right for both him and the team. And that’s a move any true racing fan can respect.
