Harry Brook and Jacob Bethell, England cricket players, have been officially cautioned against their inappropriate recent late night activity in Wellington last year by the England & Wales Cricket Board’s Independent Regulator.

The Independent Regulator made a finding against both players for breaching the Rules of Professional Conduct. However, no further sanctions were levied against either player at this time.

What Happened in Wellington?

The controversy started on November 1, when Harry Brook was the captain of England for an ODI against New Zealand. Brook stated that he drank alcohol the prior evening.

While trying to enter a nightclub, Brook was apparently punched by a bouncer at the club. At first, Brook said he was by himself. Later, he said he was with Bethell and Josh Tongue. Brook admitted he lied to be honest about his teammates.

ECB Cricket Regulator’s Verdict

The Cricket Regulator examined the matter concerning both Brook and Bethell’s conduct in relation to the discipline code/standard of conduct. The conclusions reached by the Cricket Regulator in relation to the above-cited code of conduct were as follows.

Brook and Bethell both received caution notices (i.e. formal warnings), neither player received charge sheets nor were either player suspended from playing cricket.

The caution notices will be on record for a period of three (3) years and the conduct that constituted the basis for finding a breach of the code of conduct was related to ECB Regulation 3.2 which prohibits any conduct that is detrimental to the image/reputation of the game or its players.

Josh Tongue Will Not Face Further Actions

In contrast to other players on his team, Josh Tongue didn’t receive any additional penalties.

He made a public admission of what happened

Said he will have “learned something from this situation”

That governing body did not wish to take any further action.

ECB’s Internal Response and Leadership View

England’s managing director Robert Key did not get over-the-top excited about this issue; and stated initially that no action had been taken as there was no formal complaint.

In the Ashes reviews where the Board was able to analyse player feedback, Key had commented that he was very concerned about the player behaviours:

Highlighting that, as a team, there have been some player issues regarding alcohol management.

Stressing the need to ensure a team culture is well-balanced in all aspects.

Changes in Team Culture: New Rules

Following this incident and cultural analysis, it was announced that stricter guidelines would be followed:

  • Midnight Curfew Enforced During Tours
  • This would be applicable for all series and tournaments, including the T20 World Cup
  • This is expected to be followed for all future English matches

What’s Next for Harry Brook?

Despite this controversy, Harry Brook still remains an integral part of English Cricket:

  • He remains the Test Vice-Captain
  • He is expected to feature in County Championship matches for Yorkshire County Cricket Club
  • He is likely to feature in matches for England in the upcoming series against New Zealand
  • Jacob Bethell is currently featuring in the IPL for Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
