Heung-Min Son Announces Tottenham Hotspurs Exit After a Decade of Glory
Heung-Min Son, one of Tottenham Hotspur’s most iconic figures, has officially announced his intention to leave the club this summer. The emotional revelation came during a press conference in Seoul on Saturday morning, held alongside new Spurs boss Thomas Frank ahead of their pre-season clash with Newcastle United.
Speaking to the media, Son said:
“Before we start the press conference, I wanted to say I have decided to leave the Club this summer. Respectfully the club is helping me with this decision.

“It was the most difficult decision I have made in my career.”
“Such amazing memories. It was so hard to make the decision.”
“I need a new environment to push myself. I need a little bit of change – 10 years is a long time. I came to north London as a kid, 23 years old, such a young age. I leave this club as a grown man, a very proud man.”

I want to say thank you to all the Spurs fans for giving me so much love. I hope the goodbye is also good timing and this is the right time to make that decision. I hope everyone can accept that and respect that.”
The 32-year-old forward has cemented his place in club folklore since joining in August 2015. In May, he marked his 10-year anniversary in style, lifting the UEFA Europa League trophy as club captain, his first piece of silverware in Spurs colours.
Manager Thomas Frank, who recently took the reins in north London, shared his thoughts on Son’s announcement:

“For me, personally, I would have loved to have worked with this fantastic person and player. He is a true Spurs legend in every aspect, one of the greatest players to play in the Premier League. It is never easy to find the perfect timing and me coming in from the side, it makes it a bit easier to end on a high.”
With 173 goals to his name, he ranks fifth in the club’s all-time scoring list.
Son’s Spurs career was nothing short of spectacular. With 173 goals to his name, he ranks fifth in the club’s all-time scoring list. Last season, he joined an elite group of just seven players to make over 450 appearances for Tottenham, finishing on 454.
The South Korean international also leaves behind a legacy of individual brilliance, winning the FIFA Puskás Award for his solo goal against Burnley in 2019 and sharing the Premier League Golden Boot in 2021/22 after netting 23 goals.
Son now departs as one of only 13 players in Spurs history to lift a trophy as captain. His goodbye might sting for fans, but the timing feels right, as one of the club’s greatest ever icons chooses to close this unforgettable chapter on his own terms.
