As the world shifted away from natural grass fields and toward astroturfs, artificial grass surfaces made expressly for hockey, Asian dominance started to dwindle in the 1970s. The speedier and fitter European nations started to compete better as a result of the change in surface, which led to a shift in defence. Field hockey was growing in popularity, and the 1971 staging of the inaugural men’s Hockey World Cup gave it a significant boost. India and Pakistan jointly proposed the idea of a hockey World Cup at a council meeting of the International Hockey Federation (FIH) in March 1969.

The inaugural Men’s Hockey World Cup was a successful experiment. The tournament drew up to 10,000 spectators, demonstrating that the sport was expanding beyond its Asian elite. Pakistan defeated hosts Spain in the championship match to claim the inaugural FIH Hockey World Cup. With four titles, Pakistan has likewise had the most success in the men’s hockey World Cup. Australia and the Netherlands are close behind with three apiece. In 1973, the Netherlands became the first country to win the World Cup while serving as host.

With four tournament victories, Pakistan has become the most successful squad. Germany has won two titles, while Australia and the Netherlands have each won three. Both Belgium and India won the game once. Germany (2006) and the Netherlands (1973 and 1998) both won the competition as the hosts. With six titles, European teams have won the most, followed by Asian teams with five. The only team from Oceania to win the contest was Australia.
