Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah, the world number two in women’s doubles, will be playing to defend their crown at the BWF Hong Kong Open 2025. However, the Malaysian duo has an uphill task to achieve the feat.

They will likely need to prevail over one of the pairs they have struggled against- China’s world No. 4 Jia Yifan-Zhang Shuxian – in the last four in their bid to reach the third consecutive final in the tournament.

A quarter-final meeting with Hong Kong’s world No. 16 Yeung Nga Ting-Yeung Pui Lam could be likely.

It is in the semi-finals where they might likely face their biggest hurdles against China’s world No. 4 Jia Yi Fan-Zhang Shu Xian, who hold a 4-1 head-to-head record over the Malaysians.

Another blockbuster final against Sheng Shu-Tan Ning could be in the offing.

The world number one pair have not lost to Pearly-Thinaah since the final in Kowloon last year, denying them the world title as well as the Japan and Indonesian Opens.

Whatever the outcome, Pearly-Thinaah are assured of keeping their world No. 2 ranking, having already secured enough points from earlier tournaments.
