IND vs NZ: India displayed tremendous batting strength against New Zealand in Thiruvananthapuram as they prepared for their T20 World Cup title defence. What began as a great start soon devolved into a run fest. India has posted 271 runs (271/5 in 20 overs), which is now the third-highest score in T20 International history.

The home side hit 23 sixes, which was equal to their best-ever haul in a T20 international, leaving the New Zealand bowlers stunned on a night that revealed the depth of India’s batting strength.

Tactical Clarity as Suryakumar Yadav Chooses to Bat

With World Cup preparations in mind, skipper Suryakumar Yadav decided to bat first, practicing conditions under which India could lose the toss in the tournament. He led by example, scoring his third fifty of the series, finding his rhythm in the format once again.

However, early troubles ensued, with Sanju Samson getting out for six and Abhishek Sharma getting out for a brisk 30, both courtesy of Lockie Ferguson. Despite being 54/2 in six overs, India’s plans were not derailed.

Ishan Kishan’s Explosive Exploded Tour of the Century

The moment when India became the overwhelming favourite happened when Ishan Kishan delivered a phenomenal counter stroke. Among his extraordinary attachments to place, he scored his 1st ever century in just 41 balls.

Kishan went hammer and tongs against the New Zealand spinners, especially Ish Sodhi, who got smashed for 29 runs in the 12th over. Kishan went from 47 to 75 in that one over and did not seem to hold back even after reaching three figures.

It is pertinent to note that Ishan Kishan also kept wickets during the New Zealand chase, which is a clear indication of his increasing importance in the side before the World Cup.

Middle-Order Mayhem: SKY and Hardik Join the Party

Suryakumar Yadav continued the momentum, smashing three consecutive sixes off Jacob Duffy to score the first fifty of the innings off just 26 balls. Although he was out in the 15th over, Hardik Pandya continued the onslaught seamlessly, scoring 42 runs off just 17 balls.

The final flourish of India’s innings was lethal:

  • 169 runs were scored in the last 10 overs
  • Overs 18, 19, and 20 yielded 10, 14, and 21 runs respectively

The innings came to an end with India firmly on 271/5, a menacing total in every respect.

Finn Allen’s Blazing Knock Gives New Zealand Hope

In pursuit of a mountainous target in this IND vs NZ encounter, Finn Allen responded with a breathtaking display, smashing a half-century in the PowerPlay with 22 balls. His aggressive display included hitting a six off Jasprit Bumrah and thrashing Arshdeep Singh.

Allen’s 80 off 38 balls (8 fours, 6 sixes) took New Zealand to 79/1 in six overs, the highest PowerPlay score ever against India. At the halfway mark, New Zealand were 131/2, ahead of India’s current mid-innings score.

Indian Bowlers Regain Control After Mid-Overs Surge

However, despite the positive start, it was impossible to maintain the required run rate. Axar Patel struck twice, dismissing Glenn Phillips and later cleaning up the tail.

The turning point in the match came when Arshdeep Singh bounced back in magnificent fashion, conceding only one run in his third over, dismissing Rachin Ravindra and Mitchell Santner. He later added Kyle Jamieson and Daryl Mitchell to his list of wickets, completing a five-wicket haul. Varun Chakravarthy and Axar Patel made important breakthroughs, which arrested New Zealand’s momentum effectively.

India Seal Dominant IND vs NZ Victory

Despite the tailenders of the New Zealand team bowling aggressively, with Bumrah going for his most expensive T20 bowling figures of 0/58, the result was never in doubt. Rinku Singh finished off the match by getting Ish Sodhi to end the chase at 225 in 19.4 overs. India completed a 46-run victory, checking all the boxes before the T20 World Cup.
