India’s star pacer Jasprit Bumrah thought he had a big breakthrough during the first session of Day 4 in the second Test against West Indies in New Delhi. He hit opener John Campbell right in front of the stumps, and it looked plumb to everyone watching.
But the on-field umpire wasn’t convinced. Suspecting there might have been an inside edge, the umpire gave Campbell not out. India quickly went for the review.
DRS Says Hitting the Stumps, But Still Not Out
When the third umpire checked the replay, the ball-tracking clearly showed the delivery would have hit the stumps. However, the problem was with the impact. Despite several replays from different angles, there just wasn’t clear evidence to confirm whether the ball touched the bat before hitting Campbell’s pad.
Since the third umpire couldn’t say for sure, the original not-out decision stayed. Jasprit Bumrah, walking back disappointed, let out a remark that was picked up clearly by the stump mic.
“You know it’s out, but the technology can’t prove it,” Jasprit Bumrah told the umpire, summing up exactly what a lot of fans were thinking at the time.
Campbell Survives and Makes It Count
The commentators also echoed Jasprit Bumrah’s frustration, noting that the lack of conclusive proof meant nothing could be done to overturn the call. And Campbell made the most of the lifeline he was given.
He went on to score his maiden Test century, digging in deep and helping the West Indies fight back strongly after a tough start.
But his luck eventually ran out. A few overs later, Ravindra Jadeja managed to trap him in front. This time, the umpire raised his finger. Campbell reviewed the call, but it was clearly out, and he had no second escape.
West Indies Bounce Back in Second Innings
Campbell’s innings gave West Indies a much-needed boost. In the first innings, they were bowled out for just 248 after India had piled on 518 for 5 before declaring.
India chose to enforce the follow-on, hoping to wrap things up quickly. But West Indies showed real grit in their second innings, putting up a much better fight.
