India Reveals Squad for 2023 ODI World Cup: KL Rahul Makes the Cut; Sanju Samson Left Out
In the highly anticipated announcement, Rohit Sharma has been named as the captain of the Indian cricket team for the 2023 ODI World Cup. The marquee event will see India vying for glory on home soil, and Rohit Sharma will lead the charge, with the dynamic all-rounder Hardik Pandya serving as his deputy.
The squad features some notable inclusions, including KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer, who have made their way back into the team after recovering from injuries. The core of the Indian team remains formidable, boasting the talents of Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill, Jasprit Bumrah, Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Mohammed Siraj, and Kuldeep Yadav.
India’s quest for its second ODI World Cup title on home turf is reminiscent of their triumph in 2011, under the leadership of MS Dhoni.
However, there are a couple of notable omissions from the squad. Prasidh Krishna and Tilak Varma, who were part of the Asia Cup squad, did not make the final cut. Additionally, Sanju Samson’s name is missing from the 15-member squad.
While the deadline to submit the World Cup squad to the ICC is September 5, teams are allowed to make changes until September 28 without requiring ICC approval. India will have an opportunity to give KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer some much-needed game time, as they are set to play three more ODIs against Australia following the Asia Cup.
India is set to kick off its World Cup campaign on October 8, facing Australia at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
