Ben Stokes, England’s captain, is in the headlines again, not because he led his side to a 115-run win over New Zealand at Lord’s, but because he, along with his teammate Gus Atkinson, was involved in a nightclub fight with a rugby player.
As per reports, Stokes and Atkinson broke the team curfew rules to celebrate the Lord’s victory. Both players visited Rex Rooms in London’s King’s Road.
The nightclub fight incident occurred at a venue where several academy players from Saracens Rugby Club were celebrating the end of their season. Reports suggest that a confrontation broke out involving England pacer Gus Atkinson and one of the rugby players. During the altercation, the rugby player allegedly attempted to hit Atkinson but instead hit an ECB security guard, who suffered a facial injury and required stitches.
Some reports say that Stokes might be sacked from England’s captaincy, while others say that he could retire from international cricket altogether following the nightclub incident.
5 infamous incidents involving English cricketers
While the latest controversy involving Ben Stokes and Atkinson has grabbed headlines, such incidents have been common in English cricket. Let’s take a look back at some of the most notable incidents that stirred controversy in English cricket.
1. Ben Stokes
This is not the first time Ben Stokes has been part of a nightclub incident. Earlier, in 2017, at the Bristol nightclub, Ben Stokes and Alex Hales were surrounded by controversy after a clip showed him hitting two men.
Stokes and Hales were slapped with heavy fines and backdated bans and fines by the Cricket Disciplinary Commission. However, Ben Stokes maintained that he had acted in self-defence during the incident. His legal team successfully argued the case, and the England all-rounder was ultimately cleared of all charges and found not guilty.
2. Harry Brook
England’s limited-overs captain Harry Brook found himself in a similar situation in 2025. According to reports, the incident took place in Wellington on the eve of the third ODI against New Zealand. Brook was denied entry to a nightclub, which led to a confrontation with a security bouncer. The situation escalated, and the batter was reportedly struck during the exchange. Brook later informed the England team’s security personnel about the incident himself.
Following the incident, the ECB imposed a heavy fine on Brook and issued him an official conduct warning. Later, Brook apologized for his actions, stating that he was committed to learning from the episode and earning back trust through his behaviour both on and off the field.
3. Ian Botham vs Ian Chappell
One of cricket’s most talked-about off-field incidents involves former captains Ian Botham and Ian Chappell at the Hilton Hotel bar in Melbourne. Both players offered sharply different accounts of what actually happened. According to Botham, he confronted Chappell after the Australian great allegedly made disparaging remarks about England cricket. The former England all-rounder claimed the confrontation escalated to the point where he sent Chappell tumbling over a table and into a group of local football players.
Chappell, however, has consistently disputed that version of events. The former Australia captain alleged that Botham threatened him with a beer glass and pushed him from his chair during the heated exchange.
However, the bitterness between the two never ended. More than 30 years after the original incident, the pair reportedly had another tense interaction in a car park and had to be pulled apart before matters escalated further.
4. David Warner vs Joe Root
David Warner and Joe Root are also part of the list. The incident occurred in 2013 following a Champions Trophy match in 2013. This case, however, doesn’t involve an English cricketer as Australia’s David Warner punched England’s Joe Root in a walkabout bar in Birmingham. Warner was later dropped in the next match against New Zealand and was also heavily fined.
Warner later apologized for the incident, and he said that alcohol and his aggression led to the action. He further said that he had taken offense to the English cricketer wearing an Australian-themed wig on his chin.
5. Monty Panesar
Former England spinner Monty Panesar was involved in a controversy in 2013. According to reports, Panesar was removed from the beachfront nightclub Shooshh in Brighton after complaints were made about his behaviour. Following which Panesar allegedly urinated on the nightclub’s bouncers. He then attempted to flee the scene but was pursued and eventually caught by the bouncers inside a nearby pizza restaurant.
The former left-arm spinner was handed over to police. He was subsequently fined £90 for the incident and later issued an unconditional apology, expressing regret for his conduct.
