India Faces Korea in the Kickoff Match of Junior World Cup

The Indian Junior Men’s Hockey Team is gearing up for their opening clash against Korea in the FIH Hockey Men’s Junior World Cup Malaysia 2023 at the National Hockey Stadium in Bukit Jalil on Tuesday. The Indian team, entering the tournament with a robust track record against Korea, seeks to commence their campaign on a positive note.

Having played six encounters against Korea, India boasts a favorable head-to-head record with three wins, two losses, and one draw. In their recent meeting during the Men’s Junior Asia Cup semi-final, India secured a commanding 9-1 victory over Korea, instilling confidence in the squad.

Captain Uttam Singh expressed anticipation for the World Cup, stating, “The wait is finally over, and we are very confident of a good start. We recently played against Korea, so we are aware of the challenge, but the focus will be on executing our plans and playing good hockey.”

Coach C R Kumar emphasized the team’s preparation and the need to approach Korea, a quality side, with caution. “We have to respect every opponent, it is a bigger stage, so we will have to be cautious and back our strengths to get a good start in the tournament,” said Coach Kumar.

The two-time Junior World Champions will face Spain on December 7 and Canada on December 9 in their subsequent Pool C matches, aiming for a top-two finish to secure a spot in the quarterfinals. Uttam Singh, part of the Indian Team’s fourth-place finish in the 2021 Junior World Cup, stressed the team’s focus on taking each match as it comes.

The knockout stages of the tournament, including the quarterfinals, semi-finals, and final, are scheduled for December 12, 14, and 16, respectively.
